Didn't start till the second day but got quite a bit on the wordcount- of which only 700 actually make sense. (Had to let the characters talk a bit before getting a start figured out.)

Chapter One: Flight of Fancy

It was still dark out when Rex Fury snapped awake. He twisted in bed and started to reach for the gun hanging from a peg next to the bed before he could stop himself. Beside him his new wife Winifred gave a sleepy protest and pulled at the blankets before gasping in surprise. “What is it,” she asked just as the sound of a hoof thumping against the ground drifted through the partially opened window. Rex groaned and glanced at his wife.

She breathed out a laugh and gave him a push. “Go on,” she said as she curled back up under the blankets, “before he comes up here looking for you.”

Bowing to his wife’s logic, Rex pushed off the bed and walked barefooted over to the window. Leaning out, he gave the form standing under the window a look. All he could really see of the Ceffyl Dŵr was the horse shape that the creature favored when he was out of water and the outline of the riding gear someone—probably Xing Chong since he would have heard the water spirit come in—had saddled him with.

The horse lifted his head. His eyes shimmered a deep red. Other than lifting his head however, Spectre was still. He was also not glowing with spectral radiance which was a good sign. Whatever had roused the spirit it was clearly not something that required immediate attention.

“This can’t wait till morning?” Rex asked. Spectre stamped a hoof and tossed his head then walked towards the front of the house. Rex nodded his head. “Guess not.”

Turning away from the window, Rex patted the bureau until he found the box of matchsticks. Striking one alight, Rex cupped a hand next to it to keep the slight breeze drifting in from blowing the flame out before he could light the wick on the lamp. Once lit, he carefully placed the hurricane back over it and started getting dressed.

The movement he could see out of the corner of his eyes was distracting; he’d never bothered with a mirror before and he was still getting used to the one Winifred had brought with her. After slipping his hat on he glanced at his reflection as he reached for his gun belt and wondered, not for the first time, what it was Winny saw in him.

He looked like any other cowboy out this way- maybe a touch taller than most but the same wide shoulders, muscles from long hours of riding and hiking mountain trails, square jawed and rugged features, and lines the sun had carved into the skin around his eyes from years of riding the back country and deserts between here and Texas. He looked older than his 35 years but clearly there was something there that Winifred at least found interesting.

Settling the gun on his hip, Rex picked up his badge and pinned it in place over his heart then noticed in the low yellow glow of the lamp that his wife was watching him dress. He raised an eyebrow. Winny smiled.

“I think I like it better when the clothes come off Marshal.” Winifred ducked her head and blushed prettily. Rex strode over to the bed and knelt next to her.

Lifting her head with a calloused finger, Rex said, “I’ll admit, so do I.” She smiled and he kissed her then reluctantly pulled away.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

“You better.” Winifred caught him with a hand resting against the back of his neck; holding him in place as she rose up and kissed him again. He hummed in appreciation then they both snorted in amusement when Rex was forced to grab his hat to keep it from falling. Winny lightly slapped his chest as her other hand pulled the blankets up over her breasts. “Go on, shouldn’t keep them waiting you know.”

“Yes ma’am.” Rex stood and nodded his head, tapping the brim of his hat in silent acknowledgment before leaving.

By the time he stepped outside, his two agents had joined Spectre in front of the house. Xing Chong stood in front of them, holding up a lantern in one hand while covering a yawn with the other.
