Robert was in a seriously foul mood by the time he finally reached work. How is it everyone managed to forget how to drive in the snow when this is the fourth snowstorm of the year? he thought as he stepped out of the elevator and headed for his office.
Opening the door, he found his mood shifting when he saw his secretary was already sitting at her desk, surrounded by a wall of red roses displayed in various types of vases. A little envious, Robert dropped his briefcase and scarf on one of the chairs in front of the desk and gave the roses a curious look as he rubbed his arms in an attempt to warm himself up.
The roses had not been there the night before and he wondered where the hell they had come from. As far as he knew, Darlene didn't do the flower thing. It was clear whoever had bought them was one determined individual though- or had paid through the nose to have that many flowers delivered this early- Valentine's Day or not.
Robert leaned over the shortest bouquet and asked the first thing that popped into his head. "What did you do?"
He realized as soon as the words were out of his mouth that probably wasn't the smartest thing to say but Darlene just smirked and said, "They're not for me."
Feeling his thoughts suddenly crawling like the traffic outside he said, "They're not?"
"Nope." She leaned over and pulled a finely carved bow and a quiver of arrows out from under her desk. "These are for me," she said, "the roses are for you."
"What?" he asked, then suddenly he knew exactly who the flowers were from since the bow could have only come from one person. Well, more like one thing; with Penn it was hard to be specific.
Looking at the mass of red in astonishment he muttered, "Where the hell would a shape shifting dragon and an elf find out about Valentine's Day?"
"Here," Darlene said. When he raised an eyebrow in question, she explained, "Last time they stopped by, Arthur asked why I had that day crossed off on my calendar."
Robert had noticed that himself but hadn't bothered asking about it- he just assumed she had a hot date or something planned for that day. But looking closer at Darlene's desk calendar, Robert realized there was a skull and crossbones scribbled on top of the big red X dominating that date.
"Why is it crossed off?"
"That was the day my now ex-husband decided to tell me he was in love with someone else and was going to be taking the little hussy out for dinner that night, the bastard." Darlene reached into the quiver and handed over a small note that had been wedged between the arrows. Opening it he found the note was written in Penn's distinctive handwriting.
If you need help hiding the body let me know, the dragon's note said.
"Now that is seriously sweet!" she said with an enthusiastic smile when he looked up.
He stared at her a moment. "Only you and Penn would find that romantic."
"Yeah, and you're telling me you're not happy to get a ton of flowers from your significant other?" she asked, amused.
He was but he was not about to admit that to Darlene. "I'll be in my office," he said, deciding a retreat was his best option at the moment.
"And if Arthur happens to pop in should cancel your appointments and make sure the sound proofing spell is in place?" Darlene sang out sweetly before breaking up in a fit of laughter at his annoyed look.
"Watch it or you're not getting anything from me on Secretary's Day," Robert said, looking back at her as he opened the door to his office.
"I expect to be well compensated on that day," Darlene stood up, grabbing the bow and slipping the quiver up onto her shoulder. "Have fun boss," she said as she walked out the office, locking the door behind her as she activated the sound proofing spell.
More than a little confused, Robert turned- and found Arthur standing in front of him, a rose in one hand, a bottle of wine in the other, a grin on his face and wearing absolutely nothing at all.
"Ah, I guess I will," Robert managed to say before being silenced by the elf with a kiss.
As he quickly stripped off the rest of his clothing to let Arthur warm him up with a much more enjoyable rubbing, Robert realized he was going to owe Darlene big time on Secretary's Day.
Digging the hole to help hide the body might do it. Or maybe he could just buy her a cannon.
It was something he'd have to think about- though it would have to be some other day since Valentine's Day was hardly a day to think with one's head.
Well, not that head anyway.
